Obituary

Penny Hirsch (Baumgart) passed away on December 15th, peacefully surrounded by family at Monument Health Hospice House in Rapid City, SD, after a courageous battle with cancer. She lived in Sturgis, SD, at the time of her passing.

Penny was born on July 6th, 1960, to Betty Baumgart and Melvin Stevenson in Mitchell, SD. Penny was married to Clyde Hirsch in 1978 and with their union had three children: Heidi, Dustin, and Daniel. Penny was born and raised in Mitchell, SD, and eventually settled in the Black Hills of South Dakota to enjoy her retirement and live with her kitty, Lucy. Penny proudly worked for various healthcare facilities, including the Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell, SD, where she was always a bright light to be around.

Penny is survived by her three children, Heidi (Joel) Goldammer of Mt. Vernon, Dustin (Trisha) Hirsch, and Daniel Hirsch of Summerset; four grandchildren, Jordyn Martin, Jacee Goldammer, Lexie Goldammer, and Jackson Hirsch; as well as her sisters, Angela Wethor, and Lisa Kurtenbach-Hannum; and brothers, Josh Kurtenbach, and Russell Stevenson. Her many friends and family will always remember her laugh and quick-witted humor where she probably was drinking a lukewarm cup of Folgers coffee and smoking a Misty 120 cigarette.

Penny was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Kurtenbach, and her brother, Tim Wethor.

A celebration of life is planned for the first weekend of July in Mitchell, SD.

Penny's family would like to offer their sincere thanks to all of the wonderful doctors, nurses and the rest of the staff at Monument Health Sturgis Hospital and Rapid City Hospital, as well as the wonderful caregivers at the Monument Health Hospice House in Rapid City, SD.
