IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Peter Marlen
Greenwaldt
April 25, 1951 – January 14, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Greenwaldt, age 74, on the evening of January 14 at Monument Health Hospice House. He suffered a stroke in December & remained in the hospital until transferring to hospice.
Peter was born on April 25, 195,1 in Staples, MN, to Elmer Greenwaldt and Rachel (Williams) Greenwaldt. He was the youngest of 10 children and lived on a farm growing up. Peter enrolled in machine shop classes at Staples Vo-Tech & graduated from Staples High School in 1969. He moved to the Twin Cities afterwards, worked as a machinist and built houses with his brother, Rick, and brother-in-law, Mel. In 1971 Peter met Lynne Martin in Minneapolis, and they married on December 30, 1972. In April 1973 they moved to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Peter and Lynne became parents to two children, Cody and Liza and later grandparents to Kali, Damon, Aspen, Ashlyn and Rhys.
Peter worked in the building trade, then formed his own company, Greenwaldt Building Service in 1976, specializing in custom homes in Rapid City and around the Black Hills. He was a skilled craftsman and vowed he would only build quality homes and never cut corners. He loved traveling, especially to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, walleye fishing and cars. Above all, he cherished his family, the grandkids, dogs and cats included.
He is survived by his son, Cody (Darla) Greenwaldt, Genesee, CO; his daughter, Liza (John) Lushbough, Rapid City; former wife, Lynne, and five beautiful grandchildren; his favorite brother, Richard (Annette) Greenwaldt, Wadena, MN; sisters, Dot and Ardie; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Fran & Verona; and brothers, Lester, Melvin, Gordon & Herman.
We will dearly miss Peter’s wonderful smile, happy attitude and never-ending kindness. The memories of this gentle soul will live on in our hearts forever, and we look forward to meeting him again someday!
A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapid City on April 18 at 2:00 pm. There will be a celebration of Peter’s life this summer in Minnesota.
