Philip O. Shannon, 81, Sturgis, died Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center.
Philip was born May 30, 1926, in Lantry, SD, to Otis and Alice (Olson) Shannon. He grew up and attended school in Dupree. He served in the US Army during WWII and following his honorable discharge, Philip returned to Dupree. He spent many years on the rodeo circuit. He then moved to Texas where he worked on oil rigs.Philip returned to South Dakota and worked at the SoDak Ranch, breaking horses.
He met Betty Evans and they were married November 28, 1952, in Pierre, SD. The couple continued living and working on the ranch. They later moved to Montana where he worked in construction.
They moved back to Hayes and Philip worked in Pierre for the State of South Dakota in the Department of Transportation. The couple moved to Sturgis in 2004 where they have lived since.
Survivors include his wife,three brothers, two sisters and several nieces and nephews.
His parents and one sister, Audrey Holmes, preceded him in death.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at Black Hills National Cemetery with Rev. Keith Nelson officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.
