Obituary

Nisland - Philippina "Phyllis" Stark, 89 of Nisland, passed away February 12, 2012 at Belle Fourche Regional Senior Care. She was born on September 5, 1922 to Rudolph and Philippina (Roehrich) Heidrich in Emmons County, ND. She worked for Lawrence Welk before the family moved to Butte County, SD in 1942. Phyllis was a waitress and short order cook when she married Solomon Stark in 1946. They raised their children and nephew on the family farm near Nisland. Phyllis was very active in the community from Sunday school teacher to 4-H and county extension clubs. She was a 4-H leader for the Eager Beaver and Sunshine 4-H Clubs while also a member of the Riverside Extension Club where she held numerous offices and worked for decades with the Butte County Fair. She received numerous awards for her community work including South Dakota Homemaker of the Year. After the children left home she started a new career and became very much in demand for her wedding, birthday and graduation cakes. Her joy in life, were her children, cooking and baking. Her house was always open with huge meals and lots of family time for nieces and nephews. Her last years were especially good for her when her sister Regina cared for her at home spending only a brief time at the Care Center before passing. She is survived by her two sons, Ralph (Letha) and Peter (Vickie); a daughter, Dorothy (Vern); a nephew, Dale (Michelle); three brothers, Cap, Jake and Harry; a sister, Regina; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Solomon; two sisters, Anna and Josephine; two brothers, Fred and Joe and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at the Nisland Independent Community Church. After the service, fellowship time will be followed by internment at the Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Nisland Community Church toward a youth community center was requested by Phyllis.
