Randy was born April 24, 1963, with Down Syndrome. As a result, he has spent the majority of his life at Northern Hills Training Center. In his early years, he participated in Special Olympics and later had several jobs in Spearfish and at the training center.
People often feel sorry for those with special needs, but Randy was an amazing light to those who knew him. He knew TRUE happiness--from finding just a $5 bill in a new wallet, to having a hot dog at Dairy Queen on a Tuesday. He was so tickled to get Old Spice for Christmas, or anything Scooby Doo, even a new toothbrush or toothpaste brought a big smile and a whoop! The joy in his eyes was so contagious. You could get him giggling by accusing him of flirting with all the pretty girls. His vocabulary was limited but he could tell you without hesitation the you were "funny" or "crazy" or looked "pretty". He had such a twinkle in his eyes when he thought he was fooling you by answering " I know!" to any question or statement, even though he didn't.
Randy Steven Reichardt, 56, son of JoAnn (Buchheim) and Robert S. Reichardt, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at his group home in Spearfish.
Survivors include sister, Rhonda (Richard) Gunhammer, Hot Springs, SD; nephews, Ryan Reichardt, Dustin Gunhammer, and Shane Gunhammer; aunts, Jean Schmidt of White River, Kay Buchheim of Sioux Falls, Opal Uthe of Chester, and Sheri Harner of Sturgis; and many cousins and his caregivers at NHTC.
Randy was preceded in death by both of his parents; four grandparents; and two infant sisters, Pamela and Roxane.
Randy's family would like to extend our gratitude to all the caregivers of Randy at NHTC through his entire residency there.
A celebration of life will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, December 5, 2019, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, December 7, 2019, at St. Ann Cemetery in Humboldt, SD.
