Raymond "Ray" Petersen, 86, passed away at Fort Meade VA Hospital on March 28, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Ray was born the fourth son of nine children to Carl and Elizabeth Petersen at the Cheyenne Agency on December 14, 1930. He grew up in Eagle Butte, SD graduating from high school in 1948. Ray worked the ranch until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951. He served during the Korean War with one tour completed and was honorably discharged in 1953.   He returned home to the ranch post service.

Ray married the love of his life, June T. Fish, on September 6, 1958. To this union June brought Robert Allen.  June and Ray built a home together and welcomed Arden Raymond, Janie Marie, and Joni Mae. With their family complete, Ray ranched with June by his side. Together they built a successful life on the ranch. During this time they welcomed 10 grandchildren before June's death in September 1995. Ray continued on solo for 21 years. He welcomed the 11th grandchild and numerous great grandchildren in this time. He continued on the ranch until his diagnosis in January.

Raymond was a kind, gentle man who was adored by many and will be missed by all who knew him.

He was survived by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, four sisters, and multiple nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, three brothers, a sister, and his parents.

A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held Monday April 3rd at 11am at the UCC in Eagle Butte, SD  with a graveside gathering for family at 1 pm at the Lantry Cemetery in Lantry, SD.
