Rex was born February 13, 1950, at Miller, S.D., to LaVerne Mark and Cecil Elaine (Schmidt) Hines. He attended the Rockham and Miller school systems where he obtained an eighth grade education.
Rex began a lifetime of construction work at a very young age, around eight years old, when he worked for his father's construction company until 1965 at the time of his father's death. He then worked for the Hand County Highway Department.
On September 17, 1970, Rex was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in Vietnam with the "Land Barons," the 984th LCC under the 62nd Engineering Bn. Rex was honorably discharged February 21, 1972.
On his return, Rex worked for Gustafson's Construction, Wheelburg Brothers Construction, Bartholow's Construction, and various construction companies until 1986, when he started for the State of South Dakota Transportation Department until his retirement in 1993.
In November 1972, Rex met Delores Hammill and they were married September 22, 1973.
Rex's favorite thing in life was his family...his world revolved around his grandkids, picking them up from school and sharing many special milestone moments with them. Fishing, hunting, camping and riding 4-wheelers occupied many of his days, and visiting with his many friends, both new and old. His beliefs were based on hard work to provide for those he loved.
