Richard was born December 29, 1923, in Antigo, Wisconsin, to James and Fern (Lindsay) Van Calligan.

Richard received: the distinguished unit badge, bronze arrowhead, victory medal, American Theater Service Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater service Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal for New Guinea, Southern Phillippines (liberation), and Luzon.

Richard married Ardis Rennpferd on July 3, 1948. He was ahead of his time encouraging his wife to enjoy non-traditional sports and hobbies. Richard opened up a world of adventure, love, and companionship for Ardis.

Richard E. Van Calligan, 94, of Rapid City, SD, passed away January 18, 2018, at VA Medical Center at Fort Meade, SD. His family appreciates the excellent care he received.

He is survived by his spouse, Ardis; children, Mark and Heidi, and many devoted relatives and friends.

Cremation arrangements were completed by Kinkade Funeral Chapel, in Sturgis, SD.
