STURGIS - Richard R. "Dick" Skavang, 80, Sturgis, died Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at the Ft. Meade VA Black Hills Health Care Center.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel and Wednesday one hour prior to the services at the church. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Michael Fox officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Dick was born January 27, 1927, in Crocker, SD, to Ingvold R. and Pearl (Carlton) Skavang. After his high school graduation from Bradley HS in 1945, Dick enlisted in the Army and served in Honolulu, HI, during WWII until April 1947. Following his honorable discharge, he moved to Huron, SD, where he began working for the Bureau of Reclamation. He met and married Norma June Gravett on June 12, 1949, at Crocker Lutheran Church. In 1950, he was transferred to Hot Springs, SD, with the Bureau and he also worked part time at a gas station. Their daughter, Pam, and son, Gary, was born during this time. In 1955, Dick bought a gas station from Standard Oil and moved to Sturgis with the family. In 1959, son Bob was born. In 1960, they built their home where they have lived for 47 years. He retired from Standard Oil in 1997.
Dick enjoyed camping, golfing (sometimes), being on a boat at the lake, mowing on his riding lawnmower, spending winters at their home in Yuma, AZ, and being with family and friends. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the Golden K Kiwanis, the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department, and the BPOE in Deadwood, Sturgis Senior Citizens, and the Barbershop Harmony Chapter in Rapid City for several years. He was also involved with the Meals on Wheels Program in Sturgis for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Skavang, Sturgis; one son, Bob (Laurie) Skavang, Sturgis; one daughter, Pam (Glenn) Garvin, Folsom, CA; one sister, Helen Graves, Clark, SD; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Irene Miles; half-brother, Myron Ottum; and his son, Gary.
A memorial has been established to the Sturgis Senior Citizens Center.
