Rapid City, SD - Richard L. "Dick" Smith, 84 of Rapid City, died Thursday, October 11, 2012 at his residence. Born in Clearwater, NE to Lyle and Zella Smith on August 26, 1928, he was the youngest of 4 children, with 2 sisters and a brother. The family later moved to Neligh, NE where he rode a horse to school. He graduated Clearwater High School in 1945 and went to Norfork Junior College where he was a class Senator for several terms, played basketball, and performed in plays. He graduated in 1947. He moved to the Black Hills where he met future wife Darlyne "Toots" Parkison while they both worked for Northwestern Bell. He married Darlyne on March 24, 1949 and remain married until her death in 1990. In the mid 1950's he started Arrow Plumbing and Heating and was a partner in several local businesses including a bowling alley and a tire company. Dick and Darlyne started a thoroughbred horse ranch on 80 acres in the 1960's and expanded through the 1980's racing horses at tracks from Florida to Washington State. Dick remained a Nebraska Cornhusker fan throughout his life. He was also a member of the SD Breeders Association and the Thoroughbred Racing Association. His love for his horses, dogs and especially his grandchildren continued until his death. Survivors include a son, Scott (Lori) Smith, Black Hawk and a daughter, Diane (Dave) Hammer, Kalispell, MT along with 2 grandchildren; Harrison and Parker Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife Darlyne; an infant son, Richard Smith Jr.; parents, Lyle and Zella Smith; a granddaughter, Dawn Hammer; a brother, Robert and two sisters, Doreen and Dorothy. Upon his request cremation has taken place and services will take place at a later date in Kalispell, Mt.
