Obituary

Richard P. "Dick" Smith, 80, Hoover, SD, died Sunday, August 5, 2007, at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center.

Dick was born January 17, 1927, at Pierre, SD, to Clarence and Frances (Whitney) Smith. He grew up at Fielder Bottom where he attended country school. He attended high school in Pierre.

Dick served in the US Navy from June 6, 1944, until March 26, 1946. Following his honorable discharge, he married Pat Badger in Pierre on August 13, 1948.

Dick worked on ranches until the early 1960's. In 1965, they moved to Washington where he began working in carpentry, repair work, and remodeling. He was electrocuted in 1972, which forced him into semi-retirement. They moved to Idaho, Nevada, and then to Hoover, where he has lived since.

Dick was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. His favorite hobby was woodworking, especially making interior furniture.

He is survived by his former wife, Pat Smith, Hoover; two sons, Randy Smith, Newell, SD, and Clarence Smith, Reno, NV; two daughters, Shirley Franklin, Salem, OR, and Rita Harvey, Palm Springs, CA; three sisters, Edna Braden, Woodland, WA, Virginia Lang, Portland, OR, and Barbara Hurliman, Walport, OR; numerous grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dale, and five brothers, Lowell, Don, Gene, Curtis, and Milton.

Following his wishes, his body was cremated.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2007, at the Hoover Store with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating.
