Sturgis Rita Rae Long, 73, of Sturgis, SD, died of lung cancer Thursday, February 8, 2007, Belle Fourche, SD. Visitation will be Monday, February 12, 2007 from 12:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a Rosary at 7:00 pm at the Black Hills Funeral Home of Sturgis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, with Fr. Arnold Kari as Celebrant. Interment will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. She was born on November 27, 1933 to Herbert and Marie (Maher) Shindoll in Woonsocket, SD. At 10 years old they moved to Deadwood, SD and at 12 years old she moved to Belle Fourche, SD, where she met her husband Kenneth H. Long. They were married January 5, 1952, moved to Sturgis SD, where they leased the La Belle Creamery for two years. She had a long time interest in Genealogy and was instrumental in starting the Obituary Card File at the Sturgis Library. She was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, and St. Aloysius Cemetery Board. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth H. Long and a brother Bill Shindoll. She is survived by her son James Long and his wife Lori of Berthoud, CO.; a daughter Sharon Long of El Cajon, CA; three grandchildren, Michelle and Melissa Cannon of Berthoud CO, Adrian Long of El Cajon, CA; six sisters Janet (Frank) Adams, Lucy (Larry) Wright, Jeanne (Terry) Setera, Jo (Tead) Davis, Marilyn (Rick) Gleim and Pat (Bernie) Comella, numerous nephews and nieces and several grand-nieces and nephews. In Lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of the Northern Hills.
