Obituary

Robert Daniel Wood, 61, Black Hawk, died Thursday, May 10, 2007, at his sister's residence.

Visitation will be from noon until 9 p.m. Sunday, May 13, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, and will resume at 8 a.m. Monday prior to services. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 14, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Sam Cowles officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard, will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Robert was born Sept. 18, 1945, at Huron, to Dan and Eileen (Lillie) Wood. He grew up on the family ranch near Maurine and attended Fox Ridge School. He graduated from Newell High School in 1964 and from Black Hills State in Spearfish in 1968. He taught math at the Port Huron (Mich.) Northern High School and then joined the Navy. He served four years, including one year in Vietnam. After his honorable discharge in 1972, Bob moved to Pierre and worked for the State of South Dakota as Senior Programmer. Bob married Donna Kelly on Sept. 11, 1972, and they had two children, Mark and Kelly. In 1983, Bob began working for American Mail-Well in Colorado as Systems Manager and Senior Systems Analyst until 1996.

He returned to Pierre and again worked for the State of South Dakota as an Integration Specialist until he was forced to resign in March 2007 because of failing health.

Survivors include his daughter, Kelly Wall, Cortez, Colo.; his brother, Duane (Joann) Wood, Faith; his sister, Janet Backes, Black Hawk; sister-in-law, Sonja Wood, Harvest, Ala.; three grandchildren, Joshua Wall, Mark Wall and Brittany Wood; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gary Wood; and his son, Mark Wood.

A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.
