Obituary

Robert G. Johnson of Hill City passed away December 25, 2013, at the age of 82. He was at home surrounded by his loved ones.

Bob was born July 15, 1931, in Rapid City, SD, to Olive Johnson. He moved to Kadoka at age 10 and worked on his uncle's ranch while attending school. At age 14, he began working outside of Box Elder on the Fred Wolken Ranch until age 20 when he was drafted into the military. He completed his military service as a medic at Breckenridge Hospital in Kentucky.

He married his sweetheart, Cordelia Kary May 28, 1951. He went on to work for Private Homes operating heavy equipment and doing carpentry work in Rapid City. He also worked for Perry Construction building nature trails and logging roads around Sylvan and Legion Lakes.

In 1972, Bob moved to Hill City and went into the logging business. It's hard to say when Bob retired, since he never did stop working, he would just move on to new and different projects. He was a master craftsman and one of those guys that could build anything. He built custom cabinets, dune buggies, logging trailers, and many other projects too numerous to mention. He was a visionary for the Hill City Logging Show and in 2011 was honored as Grand Marshal in the Heart of the Hills Parade. His favorite hobbies included gardening and visiting with his many friends over coffee.

Survivors include his wife, Cordelia Johnson; two sons, Rodney (Marian) Johnson and Russell (Kimberly) Johnson all of Hill City; two daughters, Nancy Reiner of Phoenix, AZ, and Julie (Dan) Martin of Rapid City, SD; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2014, at the Little White Church, Hill City, with the funeral service following at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will be at a later date with a private family burial.

A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Hills.
