Robert "Bob" Dale Steinmetz, 84, Hot Springs, died Monday, August 18, 2014, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Herbert Cleveland officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard. Visitation will be held at Kinkade Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, August 20, 2014, from 8:00am to time of service.

Bob was born in Sheridan, Wyoming to Jake and Mary (Taylor) Steinmetz. He grew up there and attended school to the 5th grade until he went to work for area ranches. He joined the Army and served from 1950 to 1953. He then joined the Navy and served until the end of his military career in 1960. He married Janice Jay Tanner in Billings, Montana on January 5, 1964. Bob obtained his GED in 1979, and finished his law enforcement education in 1980. He went on to serve as a police officer for five years at the rank of sergeant. He continued to work for ranches and eventually obtained the title of Ranch Manager. He was also a very skilled builder and carpenter, and worked in logging for a short time.

Bob liked to play all sorts of instruments, especially the accordion and steel guitar, and could do it all by ear. He also liked to sing, hunt, fish, cut firewood, tell stories, watch western movies, work, and was very artistic in many areas such as leather tooling and ceramic. He was a very friendly man with a very active personality. Bob was a good family man, taking time to enjoy everything there was to enjoy with his grandchildren. He also had a love for animals, especially dogs, and thoroughly enjoyed the occasional strawberry milkshake. He will also be remembered as a man that taught others well, including teaching irrigation to some members of the family.

He is survived by his two sons, Luke (Nina) Steinmetz, and Lucky Steinmetz; sister, Katherine (Duane) Odegard; his loyal dog, Lucy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bob is preceded by his parents; his wife; brothers, Jake and Jerry; sister, Pat; and an infant daughter, Robin.

A memorial has been established to the Rambouillet Sheep Futurity Show.
