Roger Duane Hinzman, 67, Sturgis, died Sunday, June 28, 2009 at his residence on Alkali.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Pauline Webb officiating. Burial follows at the Hope Cemetery near Newell.
Roger was born August 16, 1941 at Eagle Butte, SD, to Harold and Mary (Deurmier) Hinzman. He grew up at Eagle Butte and graduated from high school before being drafted into the US Army.
Roger married Rene Most in 1963 at Rapid City.
He served in Vietnam and was awarded a purple heart.
After his honorable discharge he returned to Western South Dakota where he worked in construction in Rapid City. He moved to Eagle Butte where he worked at the Little Dakota Truck Stop. He worked at the GTC Parts Store and was a ranch hand, bus driver, and worked for Johnny and Murphy Holloway.
He married Shirley Workman in 1983 and moved to Broken Bow, NE, where he worked on a ranch before returning to South Dakota where he retired in 1999. He was the groundskeeper of the Western South Dakota Antique Club near Sturgis.
Roger was a lifetime member of the VFW.
Survivors include his son Dion (Sunny) Hinzman, Belle Fourche; daughter, Tanya (John) Kjellsen, Newell; sister, Patty Collins, Hot Springs, SD; also four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
