Roger Duane Jensen was born in Millboro, SD, to Christian DeWitt Jensen and Marvel Belle (Painter) Jensen on September 17, 1933. He was number three in what would be nine children. As a young boy, they moved to the Eagle Butte, SD, area. He attended country schools and graduated from Eagle Butte High School in 1952.
In March of 1953, Roger was accepted for service in the United States Marine Corp and served until 1955. He was released from active duty and entered the reserves unti1 1961. From 1958 to 1961, he also served in the National Guard 109th Engineering Battalion as a medic.
Roger worked for several construction companies and while working for Moore Construction, he met his future bride, Barbara Ann Munroe. They were married in Newell on December 29, 1956. In September 1957, they moved to Sturgis, SD, and Roger worked as an aide at Fort Meade Veterans Administration. He later worked for Robert Greear and learned the plumbing trade, and with Leo Wakefield doing construction. He then went back to Fort Meade as an aide. He transferred to the Plumbing Department where he worked for another 30 years. Thirty-five years total at Fort Meade Veterans Administration. After retiring, he worked with Tim Grimsbo putting up seamless gutters.
Their daughter, Kim, was born in 1957, daughter, Monica in 1962, and son, Bryce in 1964. They lived in Boulder Canyon from 1961 until the present.
They joined First Presbyterian Church in 1961. He served as a deacon there.
Roger, 85, Sturgis, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2019, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Kim Jorensen; sisters, Janice Selby and Janelle Follett; brother, Lauren Jensen; daughter-in-law, Shelley Jensen; grandchildren, Kyle, Corey, and Samantha; and great-grandson, Jeffrey. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Preston, Derl, Lloyd, and Marvin; sister, Beulah; his daughter, Monica; his son, Bryce; son-in-law, Jerry Jorensen; and brothers-in-law, Gene Burgess and Jim Selby.
Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 15, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 16, 2019, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Pastor Paul Henschen officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
Memorials have been established to First Presbyterian Church and the Sturgis Public Library.
