Spearfish | Roger Harold Vik, 78 of Spearfish, formerly of Draper, died Saturday, May 10, at Fort Meade VA Hospice. Roger was born on April 20, 1936 to Adolph and Anna Vik in Murdo. He grew up on a farm 3 miles east of Draper where he attended school. After graduation in 1954, he enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas for two years. On February 14, 1957, he married Melva Lowry of White River. To this union were born 2 daughters, Pam and Patti. Roger and Melva were married 57 years and spent all but the last 4 ½ years in Draper, until they moved to Spearfish. Roger spent his first years working on the family homestead, farming and ranching. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and American Legion, had 20 years of Selective Service, was the former Mayor of Draper, ran and operated Roger's Trophy Room and Bar, was the co-founder and member of the Draper Gun Club, making friends wherever he went. He loved everybody, especially his family and grand children. He had a great sense of humor and never told the same joke twice. Roger's true passion was anything related to hunting and fishing. He was lucky enough, in 1972 to shoot a Mountain Goat in the Black Hills. He spent numerous years reloading shells while listening to the Twins' games. One of his favorite hobbies was trap shooting throughout the state, usually winning and bringing home trophies, hams and turkeys. He always looked forward to pheasant season and watching his black labs (Rueben's) work the fields. For many years, he went with a group of friends to their annual Black Hill camp and deer hunt. His other likes included fishing, trapping and spending time with his labs. After moving to Spearfish, he made numerous friends at the Senior Center, playing cards and volunteering at the center. He is preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Anna; two sisters, Beverly and Shirley; and one grandson, Austin Roger Styles. Survivors include his wife, Melva; two daughters, Pam (Gary) Gall of Olivet and Patti (Wade) Dowling of Spearfish; three grandchildren, Elliott (Karli) Strain of Sioux Falls, Ashley (Jake) Herman of Tabor and Audrey Gall of Olivet; two sisters, Eleanor Miller and Margaret Rankin, both of Pierre; one brother, Ray (Shirley) Vik of Draper and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be at 2:00 pm CST, Thursday, May 15, 2014 in the Draper Auditorium, Draper SD., with Pastor Rick Hazen officiating. He will be laid to rest at 2:30 pm MST, Friday, May 16, 2014 at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD., with Pastor Del Neumeister officiating. Military rights will be offered by the Sturgis Honor Guard and the South Dakota Army National Guard. Friends and family are asked to gather at 2:00 pm on Friday at Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis to join the funeral procession going to the cemetery.
