Ronelva Jean Meyer, nearly 77, of Sturgis, South Dakota, passed on Nov. 3, 2006, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm Monday Nov. 6 at Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont, South Dakota, with Pastor Steve Trefz officiating. A second service will be held at 2:00 pm Nov. 8, at Kotrba Funeral Home, in Gregory, South Dakota, with Pastor Albert Althoff officiating. Jean was born on Nov. 14, 1929, in Burton, Nebraska to Joseph Sr. and Helen (Vakiner) Krieger. In the 30s, the family moved to Lead, South Dakota in the Black Hills, where her father, Joe, worked in the Homestake Gold Mine. In 1942, they moved to the Carlock farm, south of Gregory. Jean attended grade school and most of high school in Gregory. The family then moved to Nebraska, and Jean graduated from Springview High School. Jean was an active member of the 4H Club program. After graduation, she worked at Burke State Bank until she got married. On July 31, 1949, Jean married Edwin Meyer. Their union was blessed with seven children. Edwin and Jean lived in Gregory for a few years before moving to the farm south of Gregory in 1953. This was where they raised their six children and farmed until moving to Winner in 1977. Jean and Edwin passed their interest in 4H on to some of their children. Jean loved her family and enjoyed many family celebrations and holidays through the years. She worked hard as a devoted farmer's wife, doing chores and raising her children. Jean loved to entertain, cook, play cards and read. A jack of all trades, Jean milked cows, butchered chickens, and enjoyed gardening, crafts, cake decorating and hunting. There was nothing she would not try or do. The word "can't" was not in her vocabulary. She worked with her husband, sons, daughters and father-in-law Ed on the farm South of Gregory, raising registered Hereford cattle, Hampshire hogs and farm crops, and later operating a custom farming business. To supplement the farming income, Jean worked as a bookkeeper at Gregory High School and at Buches Grocery in Gregory. Along with daughter Melanie, Edwin and Jean owned and operated the Gregory Flower Shop in 1972, until a few years after moving to Winner, South Dakota, where they started the Winner flower shop, Flowers 'N Things. They resided in Winner until retiring in 1998 and moving to Heritage Acres Apartments in Sturgis, South Dakota to be closer to their children. Due to health concerns, Jean moved to the Sturgis Regional Senior Care, where she resided until her death Nov. 3, 2006. Those who will miss Jean the most, and are thankful for her life and love, are her children and grandchildren, including Margaret (Midge) (Meyer) and husband Gail Hemeyer and their sons Shawn Hemeyer, Cory Hemeyer and wife Shendra and daughters Tristany and Treonna, and Cody Hemeyer and wife Moon - all of Spearfish; Michael Meyer and wife Jan of Black Hawk; Marcy (Meyer) and husband Arnie Barber of Piedmont and their children Buddy of Gillette, Wyoming, and Bobbi and husband Tate Wells of Piedmont; Mac Meyer and wife Lois and their son John Arneson of Rapid City; Melanie (Meyer) Fast and daughters Stacey and Allyson of Rapid City; and Mathew Meyer and wife Sharon and their sons Andrew (AJ) and Timothy of Shakopee, Minnesota. Jean will also be missed by her sister Ruth Damme of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother Joe Krieger Jr. and his wife Pat of Springview, Nebraska; sister-in-law Norma (Meyer) and husband Merrill Springer of Gregory; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Jean was preceded in death by husband Edwin, infant son Marshall Bruce Meyer and parents Joe and Helen.
