IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Roy Peter
Bungert
June 1, 1931 – September 1, 2020
Roy Peter Bungert was born on June 1, 1931 in Minneapolis, MN to Ferdinand and Dorothy (Haeg) Bungert. He grew up in Minnesota with his 14 brothers and sisters. Roy spent 4 years in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed in Omaha, NE, where he met and later married Dorothy Helen Kocourek. Roy had a hunting accident shortly after proposing to Dorothy, so he was always teased about having a shotgun engagement. After the military, he went to work for Northwestern Bell, where he worked for 33 years, retiring in 1986.
In 1995, Roy and Dorothy moved to Sturgis, SD, and got much enjoyment out of hosting bikers every year during the Sturgis Rally. Roy loved to go camping with family at Gordon Gulch in Hill City, SD, and also with the Knights of Columbus Camporees. He enjoyed fishing and drinking beer, because it was always "5 o'clock somewhere". Roy also loved to travel, especially to the Czech Republic, where he always had fun drinking with his cousin-in-law, Slavek, even though Roy didn't speak Czech and Slavek didn't speak English. During his lifetime, Roy was actively involved in the Knights of Columbus. He was the Grand Knight from 1969 to 1970, and was crowned King of the Mardi Gras in 1974. Family time was always very important to Roy, having grown up with so many brothers and sister, and later having a large family of his own with Dorothy. He was very much loved by his whole family.
Roy Bungert, 89, of Sturgis, died Tuesday, September 1, 2020, at the Fort Meade VA Hospital.
Roy is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Bungert of Sturgis, SD; his children, Joseph Bungert of Sturgis, SD, Sandra (Jeffrey) Delich of Bloomington, MN, Laurie Roberts of Centerton, AR, Robert Bungert of Sturgis, SD, and Margery (Matthew) Andryzejek of Blaine, MN; 16 grandchildren; and 5.333 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ferdinand and Dorothy Bungert.
