Roy Elton McLaughlin, 67, Rapid City, SD, died unexpectedly April 6, 2024, at Monument Hospital in Rapid City, SD. He was born January 1, 1957, in Sacramento, CA. The son of Elton 'B' and Charlotte G. (Stievener) McLaughlin.
Roy graduated from Norte Del Rio High School in Sacramento, class of 1975. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy "Silent Service" and proudly served as a Submarine Nuclear Propulsion Plant Operator on The USS Scamp (SSN-588) Mar 1978 - Oct 1980 and a 'Plank Owner' on the USS Bremerton (SSN-698), Nov 1980 - Jul 1983. During his time in service Roy was awarded the Battle "E" Efficiency, Good Conduct Medal with 1 Bronze Star, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Navy Sea Service Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars.
After his military service, Roy worked at Lockheed Martin, Sunnyvale, CA an Electronics Technician for 33 years. Living in Mountain View, CA for 40 years. He moved recently to Rapid City, SD to be closer to family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dorsie D. Tice and brother Raymond T. McLaughlin. Survived by his sister, J. Clynell Freeman (Lanny) of Midwest City, OK; brothers, James W. Sims III of Copperopolis, CA, Douglas A. McLaughlin of Roseburg, OR; and sister, L. Charlene Kornmeyer (David) of Black Hawk, SD, as well as15 Nieces and Nephews.
Committal services, with military honors, will be on July 10th, 2024, 10:00 a.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD. 'Celebration of Life' Services will follow.
