HULETT | Sandy left this earth on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 to embark on all new travels. Sandy was born October 7, 1943 to Eveland and Vivian (Marrs) Finney. She was raised on a ranch north of Hulett, Wyoming. Sandy was an only child and her best friends growing up were her horse, Sweetie Pie, and her dog, Queenie. After graduating from Hulett High School, Sandy attended Black Hills State College, working toward a teaching degree. She had fond memories of her student teaching in Pringle, SD. Sandy married her lifelong best friend, John Coleman, in June 1967 and they made their home in Belle Fourche. John loved to see her blue eyes flash when he would tell people that their first born, Tammy, came along in September. Tammy was actually born in September 1968. Cherie followed in 1972 and her only son, Chad, in 1973. Sandy was a loving mother to her three children and they will miss her guidance and encouragement. Sandy and John owned rental properties and Sandy managed all aspects of the various properties, from paint to taxes. She enjoyed bowling on the Teatime league and made many good friends in the bowling alley. Sandy was a dedicated daughter and took care of her parents as they aged. In the 1990s, life slowed down and allowed Sandy to enjoy snowmobiling and ATV riding. She especially enjoyed the years after Chad returned to South Dakota and spent family time traveling with the snowmobiles from mountain range to mountain range. She also loved taking photographs, especially of the wild horses. Sandy loved a good road trip that could last up to a month or more! She always learned the history of the places she and John visited. She had an amazing memory for details and locations. Ferry boats were never to be passed up. She would scout them out and go miles out of the way to take a ferry trip. She always sent postcards and loved to share her maps and encouraged everyone she met to travel more. In recent years, Sandy discovered geocaching and letterboxing. She and John loved to share their passion for geocaching with everyone they met. She would tell you to check out their caches at www.geocache.com under Clay to Stone. She spent hours researching and writing stories to set up geocaches in the local area. It was important to her not only to share the game but to make it interesting and present an accurate picture of the local history and geology. She liked to see the emails from all the other "cachers" who found the treasures that she had helped to hide. Together, Sandy and John placed 37 caches and found over 2,500 caches in 49 states. A few years ago, Sandy and John returned to her family ranch and established a new home place off Deer Creek Road. She enjoyed the wildlife and the open spaces but she was always planning the next adventure. She will enjoy watching down as John continues her legacy of traveling and geocaching. Sandy will always be our patron saint of happy travels. Sandy is survived by her husband of 47 years, John; her daughter, Tammy Coleman and granddaughter Honor from California, daughter Cherie (Pete Derry) of Belle Fourche; and son, Chad Coleman, from Tennessee; her aunt and uncle, Irene Hollusic and Aldean Marrs. She was proceeded in death by her parents; her aunt Eula; and her uncle Ray Marrs. At Sandy's request, there will be no services.
