Sheila was born August 22, 1949, the first child of Jack and Bonnie (Floyd) Porterfield. She grew up in Lyman, SD, population: 13, where her
family owned and operated a gas station, store, and trucking line. Sheila attended grade school at the one room schoolhouse near Lyman. She
graduated from Kennebec High School in 1965 with high honors. Sheila was president of her senior class, a cheerleader, carnival queen, and yearbook editor. She was a page at the SD State Senate her junior year of high school. After graduation, she married Doug Kindt of Oacoma and they had two children, Michael in 1968 and Brandi in 1971. Doug and Sheila divorced in 1972. Sheila lived most of her adult life in Custer, Rapid City, and Medicine Bow, WY. She worked as an auditor, bookkeeper, bank manager, and bartender. She was a single mom and did whatever it took to take care of her kids. She was an employee of Pete Lien & Sons in Rapid City at the time of her cancer diagnosis in 2010. Sheila loved her extended family, especially the get-togethers and parties. She was a dedicated daughter and spent a lot of time with her mother, Bonnie, during her struggle with Alzheimer's. Sheila's piano was the passion of her life. She played classical music with great skill and talent. She was an avid reader and a founding member of the Black Hills Bookies book club. Sheila had many friends and she loved to dance, gamble, and socialize.

Sheila Porterfield Kindt lost her fight with cancer in the early morning hours of Thursday, August 9, 2012, at Hospice of the Hills, Rapid City, SD.
She was 64.

Sheila faced cancer with such determination and grace. She had wonderful care and support from her children, Mike and Brandi, and her caregiver, Diane Parsons. Sheila is survived by her son, Michael Kindt and wife, Lisa, of Rapid City, SD; her daughter, Brandi Shannon and husband, Shawn, of Custer, SD; grandsons, Hadrian Kindt of Spearfish and Chastin Kindt of Custer; sister, Elayne (Nick) Rowe of Newcastle, WY; brothers, Randy (Leslie) Porterfield of Norman, OK, Larry Porterfield of Sturgis, and Marty (Lynda) Porterfield of Osage, WY. She is also survived by her nieces,
Ara Baumkratz and Caitlin Porterfield; her nephews, Chris Jones, Zach Porterfield, Simon Baumkratz, Daniel Porterfield, Brit Porterfield, and Chase Porterfield; her great- nephews, Harris, Aiden, Ethan, Jack, Jordan, Jaxson, Wyatt, and Owen; and her great-niece, Maylie. Other survivors are her aunt, Joanne Porterfield of Trapper Creek, Alaska, aunt, Arlene Woffenden of San Antonio, Texas, and her mother-in-law, Bernie Kindt of Oacoma, SD. Sheila is also survived by The Floyd family of Lyman County, the Porterfield family in Alaska, and the Woffendens in Texas.
