Shirley Doris (Josephson) Peterson was born September 13, 1932, on the homeplace 15 miles north of Buffalo. She grew up and went to school in Buffalo. After graduation, she went to Teacher's College summer school. There she received her permit and began teaching at the Vessey School.
On December 28, 1952, she married Neil Newlander and a year later, her daughter, Della, was born. Eleven months after that, her son, Neil Rayford "Jr.", was born. After the births of her children, she continued to teach, first at Moreau School, then Albion and Antelope Schools, and finally Dunn School. The family then moved to Colony, WY. She lost Neil in July of 1968. Shortly after, the children graduated 8th grade from Baroid School,  and then later from Belle Fourche High School.
Shirley lived several years with Della and her family in Rapid City. The past five years, however, she lived with her son and his family in Belle Fourche. Shirley was greatly loved by all who knew her, and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Shirley Doris Peterson, 87, died Thursday, December 12, 2019, at her son's home in Belle Fourche.
She is survived by her son, Neil (Marti) Newlander; her daughter, Della (Kurt) Slentz; 6 grandchildren, Shane, Neil, Robert, Missy, Lars, and Matthew; 7 great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Nathan, Andrew, Agustus, Luna, Charlie, and Arthur; sisters, Rose Schar, Joyce Jones, Verla Hiekkala, and Gloria Flinn; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jalmer H. and Evelyn (Hilton) Josephson; and her husband, Neil Newlander.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 25, 2020, at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche with Pastor Kenny Riley officiating.
