Shirley A. Remington, 88, of Sturgis, South Dakota, died Saturday, December 17, 2022, at Monument Health Sturgis hospital, in Sturgis.

Shirley was born May 31, 1934, to George and Inez Eleanor (Anderson) Blake in Sturgis, SD. She went to elementary school in Sturgis and graduated from Sturgis High School. During her high school years Shirley twirled a baton as a majorette with the marching band.

In June of 1952 she married Leslie "Darrow" Remington at Fort Meade, SD. In 1978 they started building Days End Campground and it officially opened in 1980 – the first campground that was built up to code in Sturgis! (The Buffalo Chip didn't open for another year.) They obviously met a need because in 1979 they had 300 people tenting at their place! For 21 years she peeled and boiled potatoes for the Remington Cook Shack.

Shirley enjoyed hunting, especially with her beloved 243. She got three deer the year she bought the gun and no one but her was allowed to touch it.

She enjoyed being part of the Sturgis community; being involved in the Bear Butte CB Club and a bowling league – where she held all the offices. The CB club was a radio club, mostly started to help keep track of the boys. With communication limited to landline phones and your eyeballs, they had to get creative to keep up with everyone! Her many interests included women's college basketball, the Olympics, football, and picnics in Vanocker Canyon with her husband.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Derek (Rick), Corey, and Scott; sister, Carol Filkey; and brother-in-law, Reg Filkey; 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Inez; husband, Darrow; and sons, Leslie and Darcy.

Funeral services are Saturday, January 7, 2023, 11:00 a.m., at the Sturgis United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour before the service. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery at a later date.
