Shirley Rose Zaske, 88, Box Elder, died on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at the Golden Living, Bella Vista Senior Care Center in Rapid City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm, on Monday, July 1, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Rapid City with Pastor Jeff Kintner officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery. Visitation will take place a half hour before the funeral service.
Shirley was born on February 18, 1925, at McIntosh, SD, to George and Rose Ellen (Marshall) Mackay. She grew up in the rural Morristown area and attended rural school through the eighth grade. She went on to graduate from Morristown High School in 1943. She moved to Igloo, SD, and worked at the Post Office in Provo, SD, then the ordinance depot at Igloo, SD. In 1944, she moved to Denver to attend nurses training at St. Luke Hospital. She returned to Rapid City and married Glenn D. Zaske on February 19, 1955.
Shirley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rapid City, where she served as elder trustee for a period of time. She was active in 4-H with the children, supported the boy scouts and girl scouts, and taught Sunday school. She enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, boating, and camping.
She was employed as a registered nurse with various employers such as Rapid City Regional Hospital, VA Hospital, USAF, US Army, Indian Health Services, and various other places in Minnesota, Colorado, Nebraska, North Carolina, and overseas.
Shirley is survived by her two sons, Marvin D. Zaske, Winnemucca, NV, and Clifford G. Zaske, Rapid City; three daughters, Linda S. Zaske, Mesa, AZ, Karen J. Tracy, Rapid City, and Pamela R. Zaske, Denver, CO; five grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Zaske, her parents, and her sister, Gladys Ross.
