Obituary

Simon “Sam” Kopp passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, in the Rapid City Hospital.

Sam was born on September 2, 1941, in Grant County, ND, the son of Mike and Verna (Ternes) Kopp. After growing up on the family farm west of Shields, he left to work at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD, where he raised his family.

Sam was a devoted father, grandfather, sibling, and friend whose presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He lived a life centered on family, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and connection that will continue through the generations he helped shape.

He is survived by his four children: Natalie, who has three children—Matthew, Rachel, and Emily—and their families; Randal; Corey, who has three children—Stuart, Jamie, and Stevie—and their families; and Julie, who has two children—Michael and Alex—and their families. Sam’s love extended deeply to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

He is also survived by his siblings: Betty Wolfe, Bill (Judy) Kopp, Mary Lou (Jim) Hilzendeger, Roger Kopp, and Marlene (Dave) Helbling; in-law: Nick Hersch, dozens of cousins and nieces and nephews who shared with him a lifetime of memories, laughter, and enduring family bonds.

He was preceded in death by his parents Mike and Verna Kopp; siblings: Christine Kopp, Florence Bachmeier, Louise Roll, and Doris Hersch; in-laws: Victor Kopp, Johnny Bachmeier, John Wolfe, and Phillip Roll.

Sam will be remembered for his rough exterior that hid a true teddy bear at heart. He loved to talk, joke, and connect with everyone he met, leaving behind countless smiles and stories that will live on in those who knew him.

A private celebration of life will be held with family and Edgewood family.

He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
