Standly L. Oedekoven, 81, Sturgis, died Thursday, August 7, 2008, at the VA Medical Center.
Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 11, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.
Standly was born December 1, 1926, in Sturgis, SD, to Albert and Ella (Linstrom) Oedekoven. He attended school through the Eighth grade at the Nine Mile School. He was drafted on May 24, 1945, and served until his honorable discharge on October 28, 1946. Standly returned to the family farm near Vale where he worked with his dad before taking over the operation.
Standly married Carolyn Smith in Newell, SD, on October 3, 1948. He farmed and ranched until 1982 at which time Standly and Carolyn moved to Sturgis. He still enjoyed going to the ranch and helping.
Standly was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. He was a leader of the Nine Mile Guys and Dolls 4-H Club for 17 years. He was a past member of the Vale Lutheran Church and past president of the church council. Standly was also a past director and president of the Meade County Fair Association. He was past president and secretary of the Bear Butte Farm Bureau. Standly and Carolyn enjoyed square dancing together for 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Oedekoven, Sturgis; two sons, Ricky (Carla) Oedekoven, and Darrell (Penny) Oedekoven, all of Vale; one daughter, Carol (Kelvin) Grey, St. Lawrence, SD; grandchildren, Lea Ann, Clint, Nicky, Wes, Misty, Kelli, Kristina, and Kathy; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Williamson, Sturgis, and Rose (Kenneth) Jordan, Milaca, MN; one brother, Allen (Hannah) Oedekoven, Sturgis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Arthur, Myron, and Vernon; and one sister, Lena Adams.
Memorials have been established to Grace Lutheran Church and to the Vale Lutheran Church.
