Obituary

Stephen L. Kenoyer passed away at his home on January 17, 2026.

Stephen was born August 7, 1938, in Hot Springs, SD, to Claris and Helen (Rickenbach) Kenoyer. Stephen lived in Oelrichs, SD, for his first four years. His family moved near Los Angeles, CA, during World War II. His father worked in an aircraft factory there and later in Wichita, KS. After the war, his family moved to a farm 18 miles east of Sturgis, SD. In his fourth grade year they moved to a different farm, which was 5 miles east of Sturgis, SD.

After graduating from high school, Steve lived near San Diego, CA for about three years working in an aircraft factory. He moved back to Sturgis, SD, where he was employed as a policeman for the City of Sturgis. He was drafted into the Army in 1961 and stationed at Ft. Hood, TX.

He was united in marriage to Anna Koski on June 19, 1965 in Sturgis, SD. He was hired as a South Dakota Highway Patrolman that same year. He was stationed in Howard, SD, for four years and later in Wall, SD.

After retirement in 1983, he worked for Dave Hahn in Wall, South Dakota, later working many years at a gold processing company in Rapid City, South Dakota. In January 1990, Stephen and Anna moved to their present home west of Rapid City, SD.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Anna; children, Daniel (Lori) Kenoyer of Belle Fourche, SD, Mary (Keith) Smith of Lake Norden, SD, Katrina (Andy) Johnston of Yacolt, WA, Sonja (Dan) Massie of Yacolt, WA; along with 28 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He is survived by one brother, Donald of Bellefontaine, OH.

Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Clifford; grandson, Spencer Johnston; and one great-grandson, Harlyn Smith.

Visitation will be at Kinkade Funeral Chapel on January 22 from 5 PM to 7 PM. Funeral services will be on January 23, 2026, at 10:30 AM at Hills View Evangelical Free Church in Piedmont with burial at Black Hills National Cemetery.
