Newcastle, WY - Steven Dale Kerns (Captain) age 56 of Newcastle died March 28, 2014 at his home. He was born June 26, 1957 to Kenneth and Virginia Kerns. He was raised in Newcastle, and graduated from Newcastle High School in 1975. After graduating High School, he went to welding school in Casper Wyoming. Shortly after going to welding school, he began working for Burlington Northern Railroad. Steve married Parmalee Cowles on November 5, 1977, and to this union two children were born. They were married for 18 years when they divorced. Steve enjoyed fishing, hunting, wrestling, baseball, softball, travelling to Costa Rica, and most of all, spending time with his numerous friends. Due to ill health, Steve retired early from the railroad after over 20 years of service. Steve, also known as Captain, or Kerny, was known by all as a loving soul, whom would "give the shirt off his back". Steve was a great influence on Newcastle's youth during his time as a Little League, Major League, and Babe Ruth, Softball, and Soccer Coach. Steve devoted many hours as an umpire in baseball, and a referee in wrestling. Survivors include his son, Ryan (Wanda) Kerns; daughter, Kayla (Chad) Groen; five grandchildren; mother, Virginia Tate; sisters, Jane (Randy) Rhoades, Debbie (Rex) Fletchall; brothers, Tom (Donna) Kerns, Ernie (Mary) Wood, Bruce (Janeene) Wood, and numerous nephews and nieces. Preceding him in death was his father, Kenneth Kerns; step-father, Ronald Tate; an infant brother, and a very special friend, Eddie Porter. A Memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Weston County Senior Center (627 Pine Street) in Newcastle Wyoming. Steve's ashes will be spread at a later date.
