Steven Patrick Payne, 79, Sturgis passed away Saturday, June 6, 2026 at his home. At Steve’s request he will be cremated and inurned at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, with Military Honors in June of 2027.
Steven Patrick Payne was born December 3, 1946, at Winnebago, MN to Shirley and Doris (Miles) Payne and he was raised in Welcome, MN. Steve was a multi letter winner in several sports, football, track and basketball. He was crowned the homecoming king and graduating from Welcome High School in 1964. He then attended and played football at Mankato State University.
After leaving college, he began working as a lineman, building and maintaining powerlines. He then went into the insurance business in Blue Earth, before entering banking and finance, becoming President of Madison State Bank and later Graceville State Bank, finishing his career at New London’s, United Minnesota Bank. Steve had been drafted into the Army during the Vietnam Conflict receiving a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts, among other medals, serving from February 1967 to October 1968.
He was first married to M. Lynn Scott, and later married Marie “Mimi” Kadgihn.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his best friend, Robert Roessler near Washkish, MN. Steve also enjoyed golfing and pool, being very accomplished at both.
He is survived by his two children, Jon Payne, Clarkfield, MN, and Christine (Jesse) Gingras, Piedmont, SD; his grandchildren, Bailee Harden, Devyn Payne, Sebaztian Payne, Emma Gingras, and Jace Gingras; great-grandchildren, Remus, Dorian, Draven, Norris, and Liam; brothers, Jan Payne and Mike Payne; and Mimi’s children, Jake and Kaaren. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Shirley and Doris; brother, Gene “Sonny”; and wife, Mimi.
