Sundi Dawn Brist, 53, Sturgis, SD passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital.  She fought a brave battle with stage 4 kidney failure for five years.

There will be a Family Directed Memorial Service for Sundi, Monday, 11:00 a.m., July 1, 2024, at the Newell Evangelical Church in Newell, SD.

Sundi Dawn Stapp was born October 18, 1970, in Rapid City to Tommy and Darlene (Gordon) Stapp.  She was raised in Newell, where she attended school graduating from Newell High School in 1989. After high school, she started working at Belle Fourche long term healthcare.  A short time later she began a career in what became her calling, working first at the childcare center at Fort Meade.  She spent the next several years working in childcare, she loved caring for children. Then health problems caused her to become disabled.

She married Admiral Brist on September 11, 1999, in Sturgis.  And that same year they moved to Sergeant Bluff, Iowa where she worked at the Sergeant Bluff Daycare. In 2010 they moved back to the Newell and Sturgis area. They had one son, Quinten.

Sundi was a big fan of Mickey Mouse, music and was always ready to go sing karaoke. She enjoyed playing cribbage, bingo, rummy, and watching hockey, especially when her son was playing.  She also liked watching Quinten play baseball and the cousins play basketball. Involvement in the community was an important part of her life; she was active in the Newell PTO, working with the W.I.T. (Whatever It Takes) Coalition, and the Newell Festival of Trees. She had a fondness for chicken alfredo and chicken gnocchi soup.

Many happy memories revolved around Friday night pancake suppers, being a proud grandmother, and spending time with friends and family.

Sundi was a kindhearted soul who would go out of her way do anything for anyone.

Sundi is survived by her mother, Darlene Stapp; husband, Admiral Brist; son, Quinten Brist; grandson, Malcolm Piekkola; and two brothers, Bryan (Tasha) Stapp and Chad (Amanda) Stapp.

A memorial in Sundi's name has been established to Monument Health Foundation, PO Box 6000, Rapid City, SD  57709. Attn: Monument Health Dialysis. Please note Sundi's name in your donation.
