Sylvia Marie Remington, 87, Sturgis, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2013 at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sturgis with Rev. Kay Jennings and Pastor Herb Cleveland officiating. Burial follows at the Bear Butte Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to a student nursing scholarship.

Sylvia was born December 7, 1925 at Gross, SD, to Benjamin and Victoria (Ashley) Aikins. She grew up in the rural area of Hyde County and attended small one room country schools. She attended high school in Springfield, SD, Fort Thompson, SD, and graduated from the Chamberlain High School in 1944. In the following fall she attended and graduated from Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Yankton, SD, in 1947.

She was employed at the following places; St. Mary's Hospital, North Platte, NE, Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD, Fort Meade Veteran's Hospital, Fort Meade, SD, St. John's Memorial, Belle Fourche, SD, St. Joseph's Hospital, Deadwood, SD, and the Community Memorial Hospital, Sturgis, SD for the last 31 years of her nursing career. At the time of her retirement she bore the distinction of being the longest full time registered nurse in the history of the hospital.

She married Frances W. Remington of Fairpoint, SD, at Miles City, MT in 1949.

Survivors include her children, Karla K. Aplin, Rapid City, Carol A. Smits, Sturgis; and son Duane A. Remington, Haskell, TX; also 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one brother and her husband.
