Obituary

Terry G. Mahaffy was born March 13, 1943, in Faith, SD, to Theodore E. and Marie (Foote) Mahaffy.  He grew up on the family ranch near Marcus, SD, on Sulphur Creek and attended country school at Howie School.

His love of trucking started in 1963 when he bought his first gravel truck in Sioux Falls, SD.  This purchase led to a lifetime of hauling gravel and various construction projects throughout SD and surrounding states.

He married Virginia Rae Weyer July 2, 1965.  To this marriage, two children were born, Lyman and Melissa.  They ranched at Marcus and Terry continued to haul gravel until 1984, when they sold the ranch and moved to Faith.  His pride was having his large shop with a "paint room" where he could now do body work for himself and others in the winter and construction work in the summers.

Terry married Valerie Catchpole May 18, 1991, residing in Sturgis, SD.  In 1993, Terry and Valerie became "working" snowbirds and would travel to Yuma, AZ, every winter to haul vegetables from the fields.  They spent many hours in the sand dunes with the sand railer and continued their annual trek south for nine years.

In 2001, they relocated to their current home on Nemo Road near Rapid City, SD.  Terry was very proud of his home and spending countless hours digging up the MANY rocks just hiding below the surface.  He took great pride in his yard, always wanting it mowed and well taken care of.  Retiring in 2011, Terry was then able to spend countless hours in his shop where he found great comfort either fixing or repainting his many projects.

Terry, 75, died Monday, June 25, 2018, at his residence.

Terry is survived by his wife, Valerie; daughter, Melissa (Jim) Scofield of Belle Fourche, SD; step-daughter, Julia (Vern) Tystad of Gillette, WY; step-son, James (Bethany) Catchpole of Boise, ID; daughter-in-law, Fran (Jim) McCoy of Belle Fourche, SD; sisters, Kathy (Arnold) Williams of Watertown, SD, and Inez (Butch) Jibben of Rapid City; sister's-in-law, Nadene Mahaffy of Watertown, SD, and  Ann Mahaffy of Newell, SD; 10 grandchildren; and 1 great-granddaughter.  He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, greats, and great-greats!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Marie Mahaffy; wife, Virginia Rae; son, Lyman; and brothers, Duane Mahaffy and Teddy Mahaffy.

Visitation will be Friday, June 29, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade
