IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Terry
Mulvey
March 23, 1955 – December 23, 2023
On December 23, 2023, we lost a wonderful dad, papa, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. Terry was doing what he loved, bicycling on the Island of Cozumel, Mexico, when he died after being hit by a vehicle.
Terry was born to Ray and Violet Mulvey on March 23, 1955, in Carrington, North Dakota. He graduated from Carrington High School and worked various construction jobs around the area before moving to Dickinson to work in the oil field. Terry was blessed with two children (Dustin and Melissa (Missi)) in his first marriage, to Kristi Messall. He wanted a stable life for his family and began working at Dickinson State University (keeping the lights and heat on at the University) for 32 years. In 2006, Terry married Joanie Bernard and was gifted with another daughter, Abby Brown.
Terry loved meeting new people and spending time with friends and family, sharing stories of hunting, fishing, biking, snorkeling, restoring classic cars, and traveling. He went to every car show he was near, rebuilding a few cars with his son and with help from his friends. He was always the winner at, "Guess the Car's Year and Model", listing every make and model prior to 1980.
Terry was a stranger to nobody as he would invite people, he just met into his home to spend days, weeks and even months. He loved to read and got his children and grandchildren to get him library memberships from as many libraries as he could across the United States. Terry also had a love for turtles. If he saw one on the road, he would always turn around to go back and make sure it made it safely got off the road or would pick it up and drive it to the nearest water location. He made his grandchildren promise if they ever see a turtle on the road to help save it. He also loved to swim, out swimming most of his friends and family, often diving down in the ocean to point out a cool fish.
Terry is survived by his three children; Missi (Darren) Baranko, of Richardton, ND, Dustin (Shiela) Mulvey of Rapid City, SD, and Abby (Jeffrey) Brown, of Washington, MO; 11 granddaughters Harper, Kendall, Kenzie, Larkyn, Tashina, Anya, Katya, Neveah, Nina, Nora, and Mira; and siblings, Ray (Terry) Mulvey, Ruth Seegrist, Doreen Mulvey, and Nancy Brame.
Terry was loved by so many, one of the many travelers who stayed with him, and Joanie recently shared this, "Terry was a role model for everyone, he inspired me to be a better person. I will have him and Joanie in my thoughts, decisions, and heart for the rest of my life. It comforts me that he died doing what he loved most." Terry was not afraid of death, instead always focusing on living. He made sure we knew, that when he passed, we were to celebrate his life.
Please consider joining us for a Celebration of Life on Saturday, December 30th at 6:00 p.m. at the Red Zone in Cozumel, Mexico, and on Saturday, January 13th at 3:30 p.m. at the Greenfield Pub in Lead, South Dakota.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, next time you see a turtle, take a moment to pause, send Terry a positive thought, thank God for your blessings and by all means, Save the Turtle for Terry!
