Obituary

Belle Fourche - Terry L. Richards, 72 of Belle Fourche, died October 26, 2011 at the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center Hospice Unit in Fort Meade. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1962. Terry was born in Hecla, South Dakota on September 9, 1939 to Clarence "Beanie" and Alice (Smebacken) Richards. He spent his early childhood days growing up in Steele, North Dakota and graduated from the Steele Public School. Terry was a very accomplished golfer and some of his happiest memories were those spent on a golf course. He was the state amateur golf champion in North Dakota. He golfed with such notables as Lawrence Welk and Myron Floren, while he lived in North Dakota. He even had the distinguished opportunity to golf with President Dwight Eisenhower while stationed at Norfolk, Virginia. Survivors include one sister Allaire Richards, Belle Fourche and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence "Beanie" Richards; his mother Alice Lillian Smebacken Richards and one sister, Renee Malek. Memorial services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at the Ft. Meade VAMC E Ward Dining Room, 113 Comanche Road, Ft. Meade. with Chaplains Ralph Vencill and Rene Porter-Stewart officiating. Inurnment will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, at Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard and the South Dakota National Guard. A memorial has been established to the Ft. Meade VAMC Hospice Unit.
