CAMP CROOK - - Thomas Henry "Tommy" Moseley, 83, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at his home. Tommy was born on Sept. 29, 1928, to Thomas A. and Pansy F. (Clark) Moseley. He grew up on the family ranch and attended up to his first year of high school in Camp Crook. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy just after he turned 17 in 1945. He served aboard the USS Cumberland Sound, a seaplane tender that was converted to a laboratory ship. The ship was involved in Operation Crossroads which tested the effects of atomic bombs on naval vessels. He was honorably discharged as a seaman, second class, on Nov. 5, 1947. Tommy married Inez Colvell on May 21, 1949. The couple had two sons, Scott Alan, born in 1950, and Clark Alvin, born in 1951. Tommy started working at Montana Dakota Utilities (MDU) in 1951 and he moved his family to Rapid City in 1952. He worked at MDU for 25 years, retiring in 1976 as a construction superintendent. He then moved back to the family ranch where his father was in poor health. After his father's death, he worked the ranch in a partnership with his brother, Max. He and Inez built a house on the ranch in 1977 and Tommy and Max split the work until 1992, when he sold his interest to Max. He remained in the house and lived there until his death. Tommy and Inez divorced in 1997. In 1999 Rita Baier became his companion. Tommy was very involved in the community. He served as Director of the Short Pines Grazing Association for many years, was a lifetime member of the Camp Crook Roping Club, and was a member of the Harding County Stockgrowers Association, the Fairview Cemetery Board, the VFW, the American Legion, the National Rifle Association, and the National Association of Atomic Veterans. He was also a brand inspector for the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association from 1978 to 2006. Tommy enjoyed researching the history of the area and using his metal detector to discover artifacts from the Custer Expedition, and any other places of interest. He was willing at any time to help his neighbors in the community at branding and roundup time, and any other times that his presence was needed to lend support to the community. In addition, he enjoyed leatherwork, woodworking and the occasional game of pool. Survivors include his dear companion, Rita Baier, Camp Crook; sons, Scott (Holly) Moseley, Spearfish, and Clark (Mary Jo) Moseley, Magnolia, Texas; four grandchildren, Leslie Egan, Claire Moseley, Sophie Moseley and Louis Moseley; one great-grandchild, Augustin; and brothers, Max (Shirley) Moseley, Camp Crook, and Richard "Dick"(Betsy) Moseley, Belle Fourche. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas in 1976 and Pansy in 1993; and a sister, Margaret "Joan" Baier in 2011. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, at Camp Crook Area Community Center with his son, Scott A. Moseley, Colonel USA (Retired) ObJN officiating. A memorial has been established.
