RAPID CITY | Thomas "Tom" Jay Steele, 71, passed away on December 8, 2014 at Rapid City Regional Hospital after a short, but courageous battle with lung cancer. Tom was born on September 21, 1943 to Walter and Maybelle (Haag) Steele in Clearfield, South Dakota. His birth was welcomed with excitement, as there were seven girls born before him. Tom was baptized and confirmed at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Clearfield. Tom spent his childhood on a farm in Clearfield, and later moved with his family to Boulder, Colorado. Tom graduated from Boulder High School in 1962. Tom was active in sports and a very talented athlete. In 1960, he competed and won the Golden Gloves boxing competition in Colorado. Tom enjoyed car racing and dirt bike riding, and was very proud of the Corvettes he owned and raced. He married his high school sweetheart, Margi Powell, and moved to Miller, South Dakota, where he owned Steele's Service Station. Margi and Tom had two sons. Tom was involved in growing Miller's fast pitch softball and baseball programs, where he played and coached. Tom continued his education through T.C.I. where he sold cattle nutrition products. He also received accreditation through the Independent Order of Foresters in Rapid City, SD, where he was District Manager over parts of Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska. Tom received District Manager of the Year in 1987. Through this employment, Tom was able to live in many states. Tom entertained his family and friends with his jokes and stories. Tom will be remembered as a fun loving person, along with his cowboy ways. Tom was passionate about sports and specifically enjoyed watching the Denver Broncos. Tom enjoyed traveling and had no fear of new adventures. Family left to cherish his memory are his sons, Thomas Zane Steele and Carmen Jay Steele from Rapid City, SD; his daughter, Kimberlee (Austin) Jager from Sioux City, Iowa; love of his life, Margi Powell from Rapid City, SD; his siblings, Darlene (Glen) Huddle from Valentine, NE, Mary Ellen Lynass from Rapid City, SD, Shirley Flynn from Spearfish, SD, Carol (Richard) Fernandez from Longmont, CO, Arla (Bill) Stark from Birmingham, AL, Margo (Louis) Rosser from Las Vegas, NV, Charles(Nancy) Steele from Boulder, CO, Allen (Star) Steele from Erie, CO, Doug (Helene) Steele from Bozeman, MT, and Brad (Gina) Steele from Loveland, CO; his grandchildren, Carson, Kaydence and Caleb Jager; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Joyce Mayes and Maureen Williams; and brothers- in- law, Marvin Mayes, Dwight Williams, Jack Lynass, and Jim Flynn. On Saturday, May 23, 2015, Tom's life will be celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Catholic church in Winner, SD, and interment to follow at the St. Boniface Cemetery in Clearfield, SD.
