Toby was born to Art and Dorathy (Evens) Ludwig in Denver, Colorado on November 1, 1938. She attended grammar school and moving to Edgemont, South Dakota with her parents where she attended high school, graduating in 1956.While in high school she dated Bob Coates who would later be her husband. Toby married Bob on April 9, 1957.

Bob was in the Air Force and Toby immediately became a military wife, which she enjoyed as Bob moved from base to base for the next 22 years. In 1958 she was blessed with a son Roburt on May 29, and later with a beautiful daughter Lisa on January 3rd, 1962. With her family complete, she accompanied Bob on his military assignments, living at many locations around the US.

Toby's family was her life especially with an addition of two Grandsons, Danny, who was never really in her life due to a divorce and Steven who loved his Grandma with an unconditional dedication.

Toby's health began to fail and she required major surgery at Mayo clinic and was treated in Rapid City, SD, until her health finally took her life. She was looking forward to her 59th Wedding Anniversary on April 9.

Leaving to mourn her death are her husband Bob, and her children Roburt and Lisa plus her grandchildren, and a host of life long lasting friends.

Preceding her in death were her Mother, Father and Brother.
