Mavis was born January 28, 1931 in Sturgis, S.D. to Harvey G. Fitzgerald and Stella W. (Green) Fitzgerald. She grew up and attended school in the Enning-Stoneville area.
Mavis married Robert (Bob) Symonds on April 19, 1946, in Broadus, Montana. To this union, three children were born: Marlene, Marilyn and Robert (Robby).
They ranched in various rural areas in South Dakota until 1955, when they moved to Sturgis. She helped Bob with his construction business for many years. In 1966, they moved to Longmont, Colorado and she worked for IBM. In 1971, they moved back to Sturgis. In 1975, they opened the Sturgis Rent-All. Mavis' favorite job was as a rural mail route carrier for several years in the Sturgis area. In 1981, they retired and enjoyed camping as well as spending time with their grandchildren.
Mavis loved to crochet and make quilts. We will never forget the twinkle in her eyes when a new baby was on the way and she could make another baby quilt. She was also a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary.
Mavis is survived by her daughters, Marlene Albertson, Sturgis, Marilyn (Dick) Sass, Wheatland, WY; one son, Robby (Robin) Symonds, Sturgis; 8 grandchildren, Todd Dow, Travis Sass, Tracy Sass, Kody Spaulding, Kacee Spaulding, BJ Laymon, Rhonda Fairbanks, and Ryan Symonds; one brother, Harvey Fitzgerald, Sturgis; one sister, Audrae (Don) Howard, Sturgis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob; infant brother, Ralph Thomas Fitzgerald; sisters, Shirley Demerly and Wyona Sundstrom.
We the family, feel honored to have shared her life. We are blessed with many fond memories and she will be missed tremendously by all.
We will always miss you!
