RAPID CITY| Verla M. Lang, 87, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2015 at Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City. Verla Mae Lang was born on August 25, 1927 to Boyd and Mabel (Iverson) Veal in Chance, SD. She attended rural school in Chance and two years at Bison High School. She graduated in 1946 from Rapid City Central High School. After graduating, she returned to Chance where she lived until moving to Faith in 1948. Verla worked for Wolff Implement in 1951 and Farmer's State Bank in 1982 for 23 years with the exception of working as Field Office Manager for Central Dakota Missile Placement from 1962-1963. She married the loved of her life, Wayne F. Lang on February 21, 1956 in Faith. They had one son, Robert. They spent many years traveling and visited numerous places including Alaska, Hawaii, Australia, and the eastern Caribbean. The family lived in Arizona for five years and summered in Rapid City until residing at Echo Ridge in Rapid City the last twelve years. She was active in various community organizations including leading the Boy Scouts and passionate about history. She compiled family history and authored and published The Veal's of Chance. As Verla was the matriarch of the family, she is survived by her husband, Wayne, Rapid City; son, Robert Lang, Hill City; brothers, Don (Bonnie) Veal, Boyd Veal, and Richard "Dick" Veal; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Darrel and Tom Veal; and sister, Mildred Veal. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City on Tuesday, April 21, 2015. Funeral services are Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Indian Creek Lutheran Church (intersection of Hwy 73 and Hwy 20) near Meadow, SD with Reverend Herbert B. Cleveland and Reverend Lloyd Veal officiating. Burial will follow at Chance Cemetery near Meadow under the direction of Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis. A memorial is established in Verla's name to Hospice of the Hills, 224 Elk St, Rapid City, SD 57701.
