Viola Delbridge, 97, of Rapid City, died March 19, 2014, at Fountain Springs Health Care.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 23, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel from 4-8 p.m. with family present.
Funeral services will be Monday, March 24, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at the Union Center Community Center with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at the White Owl Cemetery.
Viola Delbridge, was a long time resident of the Howes, Plainview area. She was born November 9, 1916, near Boneita Springs, later named Haydraw, SD, to Ryerson "Earl" and Amelia (Grupe) Kellogg. Her mother passed away when Viola was very young, so she grew up with her father, brothers, and sisters. She attended country school through the 8th grade then went to high school in Iowa and Rapid City where she graduated. Viola received her Teaching Certificate from Spearfish Normal and for the next seven years taught at Elm Springs, Alkali, Mann School, Fairpoint, and Nigger Creek.
Viola married Ernest Delbridge on March 28, 1942, and raised 7 children. She was a great mother and homemaker. She also worked as a ranch wife.
After retirement in 1999, Ernest and Viola moved to Sturgis where they lived in the High Rise for four years. Due to Viola's health, they moved in with their son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Susan. They moved to Country Side Estates in Faith. Following several hospital stays, Viola was sent to Beverly Health Care for therapy. Following her release, she moved to Fountain Springs Health Care in Rapid City where she has lived since.
Viola was an active member of the Church of Christ. She was a member of the Extension Club and received her 25-year pin. She was also a member of WSCS, and was on the election board. Viola was secretary of the Farm Bureau for 4 years, Women's Chairman of the Farm Bureau, and was active in many community functions.
Survivors include her children, Arnold (Camille) Delbridge, Cedar Falls, IA, Sandra Cox, Jefferson, OR, Harold Delbridge, Red Owl, SD, Norman (Susan) Delbridge, Faith, SD, Lyle (Juanita) Delbridge, Union Center, SD, and Paul (Debbie) Delbridge, Howes, SD; sixteen grandchildren; and forty great-grandchildren.
Viola was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Lloyd; two brothers; four sisters; one grandson; one son-in-law; and one daughter-in-law; one grandson in law.
Because of her love of children, a memorial has been established to the Faith School Library.
