Viola was born October 11, 1942 at Corsica, SD, to Ralph and Martha (Bruning) Powers. She spent her life close to family and friends. She taught her children the importance of being near family. She was also a dear friend and second mother to many of her children's friends. It was common to see other children staying at her house. She would lend an understanding and caring ear and a stern lecture when they needed it. Anyone that knew her called her Mom, Grandma, or Friend.

She loved children and worked with many while working as a Direct Support Professional at Black Hills Special Services for 25 years before retiring in 2013. Her influence of ethics and compassion were felt by all she encountered in several different facilities over the years.

Her hobbies were spending time in her flower garden, crocheting and she was not opposed to spending time in Deadwood. It was considered a rite of passage to all her grandchildren.

Viola May Zaugg, 74, Sturgis, died February 20, 2017 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her children; Julie Schmit, Sturgis, James Hoey, Rapid City, Jeffrie Hoey, Sturgis, Kellie Mraz, Sturgis; ten grandchildren, Corey Schmit, Kyle Mraz, Thomas Mraz, Casey Schmit, Tristan Hoey, Brandon Mraz, Kenyon Hoey, Blaine Mraz, Kaya Kuriga, Alisha Labane; five great grandchildren; brother, Gerald (Deb) Powers, Sturgis; aunt, Viola Chiller, Sturgis; first husband James Hoey.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and second husband, Eugene Zaugg.

Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
