Virginia Lee (Szymanski) Scherer was born July 17, 1928, in Sturgis, SD, to John and Virginia (Conlon) Szymanski. She grew up in Sturgis and graduated from Sturgis High School in 1946. Following graduation from Chillicothe Business College in Missouri, she lived and worked in Texas, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Montana before returning to her family and friends in Sturgis and the Black Hills. Virginia married Robert Scherer on July 2, 1956, in Rockwall, TX, and worked at Massa-Berry Clinic for over 37 years before retiring.
Virginia was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Sturgis Regional Hospital Auxiliary.
Virginia, 89, Sturgis, died Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at Sturgis Regional Hospital.
Survivors include her son, Lance, and his wife, Malisa, and her granddaughter, Payton, Sturgis; her son, Clay, Alexandria, VA; and her sister, Etta Mae Bateman, Rapid City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, John and William George Szymanski.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 3, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 4, 2017, at the old St. Martin's Chapel in Sturgis. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
