Virginia was born September 19, 1933, on the farm near Rhame, ND, to Albert and Cyrilla (Heying) Schaefer. She attended school at Harper County School until graduating the 8th grade and worked on the family farm.
Virginia married Art Grenstiner at Rhame, ND, on October 6, 1953. They moved to Deadwood, SD, in 1954 where Virginia was a devoted Catholic, wife, and mother. Once all of their children were raised, she managed the Covered Wagon Drive-thru until it closed and worked in the dietary department at the Sturgis Hospital for nearly 2 decades.
Virginia Mae Theresa (Schaefer) Grenstiner, 82, rural Sturgis, died Friday, July 15, 2016, at Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital.
Survivors include brothers, Laverne (Margaret) and Jerome (Lorayne); sister-in-law, Audrey Schaefer; sons, Anthony Grenstiner, Sturgis, Mark (Dawn), Sturgis, and Eric (Samantha), Sturgis; daughter, Marcella (Randy) Westendorf, Deadwood; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Art; daughter, Kay; and one brother, Merlyn.
Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19th, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, with rosary services beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood with Fr. Leo Hausmann officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery near Deadwood. The family invites everyone for fellowship at the auditorium across from St. Ambrose Catholic Church.
A memorial has been established to the St. Ambrose Catholic Church.
