Virginia Rose Swanson was born on April 24, 1948, to Albert and Clara (Schutl) Swanson of rural Gettysburg, SD. She went to a country school about a half mile down the road. She then went to Gettysburg High School in 1966, after graduating, she went to business school in Aberdeen, SD. During her high school days, she once tried to park a 1957 Chevy up a telephone pole. After she finished business school, she moved to Pierre, SD, and worked at the State Capitol building.
She met and married Robert A. Walton, December 6, 1968. They had four children: Shane, Robert, Carmen, and Tammy. Her husband was in construction, so they moved around the country, living in Pierre, Belle Fourche, Lead, Deadwood, South Dakota; Colorado Springs, and Rifle Colorado; Borger, Texas; and Syracuse, Utah. Robert and Virginia moved back to South Dakota in 1992 and have lived in Deadwood the last 28 years.
Virginia Rose Walton, 72, Deadwood, died November 10, 2020, at Monument Health Sturgis Regional Hospital.
Virginia is survived by her husband, Robert; four children, Shane, Robert (Kendra), Carmen, and Tammy; two grandchildren, Robert Lee, and Amber; brother, Ted; sister, Lorraine; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Clara, and brothers, Marvin, and Jim.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2020, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with a visitation starting at 9:00 am until service time.
Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Deadwood, SD.
A memorial has been established to Twin City Animal Shelter in Lead, SD.
