Waino Victor Wanhanen, 94, Whitewood, died Thursday, August 13, 2009, at his residence in Whitewood.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood with Rev. Jon Mapa officiating. Inurnment will follow at the St. Onge Cemetery.
Waino was born June 16, 1915, at Elk Creek, SD, to Otto and Mary (Teerisala) Wanhanen. He attended country school and learned to work at an early age.
Waino married Alice Leeling at Lead, SD, on January 25, 1942. They lived in various places in the Black Hills area until moving to Whitewood in August of 1951.
Waino worked for the Homestake Gold Mine and retired from the Homestake Sawmill in Spearfish. He like to hunt and fish.
Survivors include his sons, Larry H. Wanhanen, Rapid City, and David V. Wanhanen, Whitewood; two daughters, Janice M. (Dennis) Sisson, Sheridan, WY, and Charlotte K. (Russell) Fiedler, Whitewood; one grandson, Joshua J. Fiedler, Whitewood; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; brothers, Swen, Wilho, Wilhart, and Walter; and sisters, Mamie, Helma, and Senja.
A memorial has been established to the Immanuel Lutheran Church.
