IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Walter J.
Price
March 21, 1923 – January 16, 2025
Walter Joseph Price was born on March 21,1923 to Joe & Ida Price, joining 3 older brothers, Graydon, Stanley, & Maldwin, and two older sisters, Elsie & Olive. Sister Opal and brother Harley followed. Walt attended East Pine School near Opal, graduating from Faith High School in 1941. After graduation, he worked for area ranchers.
On February 27, 1945, Walt married Thora Imsland in Broadus, MT. They started their married life in a sheep wagon near Fox Ridge tending sheep the first year, then moved near Alkali and worked for Walt's brother Stanley. They welcomed 2 sons to their family, Walter LeRoy (Roy) in 1946 and Alan in 1947. After a few moves and different job opportunities, their family set down roots near Red Owl and raised sheep and cattle. Walt was very active with all aspects of ranching and loved breaking horses. He also served on the local school board, ASCS committee, and FHA committee.
After retiring in 1991, Walt & Thora became snowbirds for a few years, traveling to Arizona where they enjoyed golfing and making new friends. He enjoyed golfing so much, that he installed a 9-hole course west of his house so he & his family could "pasture golf". But Walt never truly retired; he was always helping a friend or family member, working on a house project, or had another colt to break. He continued breaking horses until the young age of 84, when a shoulder injury no longer permitted it.
Walt loved time spent with family and friends creating many memories that will forever be cherished. Tending sheep overnight, checking cattle while singing "Back in the Saddle Again" & "You Are My Sunshine" with his grandchildren, going on "ventures" & building teepees with his great-grandchildren are just a fraction of the memories that will be treasured by his family.
Walt Price, age 101, passed peacefully at his home on Thursday, January 16, 2025 after losing his beloved wife of 79 years, Thora just days prior.
Grateful for sharing in his life are his grandchildren Launa (Shane) Grubl & Chad (Jenny) Price; great-grandchildren Teigen & Trey Grubl, Brayden, Brigg, & Brynlie Price; sister Opal (Don) Grubl; brother-in-law Ted Imsland; sister-in-law Oasa Murphy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Walt was preceded in death by his wife, Thora; parents, Joe & Ida Price; son Roy (2002); son & daughter-in-law Alan (2017) & Merla Dawn (2018); brothers Graydon, Stanley, Maldwin, Harley; & sisters Elsie, & Olive.
No services will be held per Walt's wishes. A memorial has been established for Walt & Thora to the Opal & Red Owl Fire Departments. The family will hold a celebration of life for Walt & Thora at the VFW in Sturgis on February 7, 2025 at 1 pm.
Adios, cowboy.
A cowboy rides in Heaven
Roped by Our Father's hand
To dwell amid the angels
Within the Promised Land
His hat is now a halo
His boots now touch the clouds
His wit and friendly musings
Now charm angelic crowds.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.kinkadefunerals.com.
