Obituary

Wanda Renae Crawford, 50, Sturgis, died Sunday, August 25, 2013, at her parent's residence in Sturgis.

Visitation will be from noon to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 30, 2013, at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Pastor Henrique Fleming officiating. Burial with military honors will follow.

Wanda was born May 7, 1963, in Deadwood, SD, to Jesse and Suzanne (Mollerud) Whitford. She grew up in Sturgis and following her graduation from Sturgis Brown High School, she enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 12, 1982. She completed basic training in North Carolina and served her enlistment at Camp Pendleton, CA. After her honorable discharge in 1984, she moved to Jacksonville, NC, and worked as a Program Manager at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune supporting Marines and their families. In 2001, she moved to Chatham, VA, where she served as the Director of Development for Hargrave Military Academy. In 2004, she moved to Washington, DC, and worked for the Department of Transportation. In 2005, she began work at Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation raising funds for Marines and their families pursuing higher education. In 2007, she began work with BAE Systems coordinating professional development training from management and executives. In 2008, she moved to Denver, CO, and continued working with BAE Systems. In 2010, she went back to work for the US Government with the Office of Natural Resources Revenue within the Department of the Interior as the Senior Assistant to the Deputy Director.

Along the way, Wanda earned her Bachelor's degree at The University of North Carolina at Wilmington in Business Management and a Master's degree from Capella University in Organization Management and Leadership.

Wanda enjoyed hiking, biking, family, public speaking, and the pursuit of a good golf game. She was a constant philanthropist supporting charities benefiting people with disabilities, cancer research, and higher education.

Survivors include her son, Anthony Ryan (Jamie) Martinez and their daughter, Ava Renae, Elizabeth City, NC; parents, Jesse (Sue) Whitford, Sturgis, SD; two brothers, Keith (Karen) Whitford, Sturgis, SD; Les (Robin) Whitford, Rapid City, SD; one sister, Susie (Kevin) Kuntz, Centennial, CO; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Northern Hills.
