Obituary

Wayne A. Freeland, 86, Lead, died Sunday, September 18, 2016, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Friday, September 23, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Methodist Church in Lead with Pastor Mark Phillips officiating. Inurnment, with military honors, will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Wayne was born October 17, 1929, in Palmer, NE, to Frank and Jessie (Swaim) Freeland. He grew up in Palmer and graduated from Palmer High School in 1948. He studied taxidermy for a time. Wayne served in the US Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged.

Wayne moved to Lead in the mid 1950's. He worked for Homestake Gold Mine for several years.

Wayne married Dorthy (Tryon) Dachtler in 1959. They continued to live in Lead.

He was a mail carrier in Lead until his retirement from the post office. Wayne then ran a trolley in Deadwood and later worked as security at Wharf Mining Company.

Wayne was active in the local Boy Scout and Cub Scout program in Lead for many years. He loved wood working and excelled at cabinet making. He was a long-time member of the Trinity Methodist Church and also enjoyed going to the chapel at Rochford, SD, in good weather. Wayne loved to hunt deer and spent many nights fishing off his boat at Deerfield Lake with this family. He also enjoyed raising his "bunnies" and showing them to the grandkids.

He is survived by his brothers, Ernest Freeland, Council Bluffs, IA, and Don Freeland, Hampton, NE; five sons, Dave Freeland, Spearfish, Philip "Doc" Dachtler, Sturgis, Larry Dachtler, Bruno, AR, Howard Dachtler, Madison, SD, and Wayne (Barb) Dachtler, Arvada, CO; grandchildren, Brian Dachtler and Eric Dachtler, both of Littleton, CO, Lisa Dachtler, Sturgis, Linda Dachtler, Rapid City, Perry Dachtler, Irene, SD, Tabitha Dachtler, Ft. Lewis, WA, Gregory Dachtler, Old Ham, SD, Heather Dachtler, Madison, SD, and Larry Carl and Connie Dachtler, Camby, IN; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Jessie; his wife, Dorthy; and one sister, Dorothy Witton.

A memorial has been established.
